Some pet owners feel forced to separate from the beloved animals because they have lost their home or job. As they try to find a new place to live, pets suddenly become more expensive as apartments often require a pet deposit. Even in Lubbock, Texas, the Humane Society of West Texas has seen increased abandonments due to the financial meltdown. This has been a widespread problem, with abandonment of pets dramatically increasing and animal shelters have been filling up fast. The Humane Society of the U.S. has responded to the crisis by providing grants to shelters in various cities, although the number and amount is still limited, given the scope of this problem. It is a difficult time for many and we hope as few as possible pets (as well as humans) suffer the consequences of this financial mess. If you are in need, or know someone who is, here is a resource to help you find financial aid for the care of your pet in your area. We also need donations to assist in our efforts to help these families stay together. Please send donations, payable to The Humane Society of West Texas, with Financial Crisis in the memo line, to:

I think what you are doing is wonderful. I'm an animal shelter volunteer here in Greenville, NC so I have seen the same problems. Keep up the good work. Peace.
